How Potato Parable Can Teach Us About Abundance

As a child I was pretty inquisitive. When I got a toy, it wasn’t unusual for me to take it apart to see how it worked. I remember when I got my first doll with moving arms and legs – I pulled the doll’s arm out of the socket to see what allowed it to move.


So it shouldn’t surprise you that as a child I once planted a potato in the ground to see what would happen.

Attracting Abundance During a Recession: The Potato Parable

In a recession, it is easy to despair and focus on what's going wrong instead of what's going right. We fret about having enough money and how we're going to get by.

When the anxiety bug hits me, I remember my Potato Parable.

As a child, I planted a potato in the ground to see what would happen. After digging a hole, preparing the soil, putting the potato in the ground and covering it up, I stood back with arms folded across my chest, waiting for something to happen. After a few minutes, I began to think that maybe this would take longer than I thought.

Every day I checked on the spot where the potato was planted and watered it when it got dried. After a couple of weeks where nothing happened, I was ready to give up. Then one day, I saw a tiny little sprout where my potato had been planted.

I didn't know if it was connected to my potato but I didn't take any chances and nurtured the seedling all summer. By the fall, it had grown into a bushy healthy plant. I was curious, though, as to what happened to my potato so I dug up the plant. To my amazement, from my one little potato tubers had grown and produced about 18 more potatoes!

This parable teaches us:

1. first you have to plant the seed; if no seed is planted, what grows may not be to your liking.
2. have faith, even when you don't see immediate results.
3. know that the "roots" are growing to provide a stable foundation even when you can't see what's happening.
4. nurture what you've planted.
5. eventually your seed will mature and provide more than you had expected.

In today's economic climate, it is easy to despair and be fearful that you will experience lack.

It is times like this recession, though, that we need to shed our limited thinking and expand our abundance mentality.

When I was 10 years old, I planted a potato to see what would happen. I dug a hole in the garden, planted the potato in the ground, covered it with soil, watered it and stood back waiting for something to happen.

After a few minutes I figured that the process might take a little longer. So every day I watered the spot where I had planted the potato. After a couple of weeks and on the verge of despair, I noticed a little sprout where my potato had been planted. Though I didn't know whether the sprout was connected to my potato, I wasn't going to take any chances!

So all summer long, I watered, tended and nurtured the little sprout. By fall, the little sprout had grown into a lush bushy plant. I was so proud! Then I got curious - I wondered what had happened to my original potato, so I dug up the plant.

To my amazement, from my one little potato had grown more that 18 new potatoes!

That's how abundance works:

1. First you have to plant something!
2. Then you have to have faith, trust and belief that what was planted will grow.
3. Though you may not be sure, it is crucial to nurture what is growing.
4. Eventually you will reap the abundance of what you have planted.

And when you have abundance, you have no fear of lack.

See the Opportunities in this Recession

Morph this crisis into an opportunity!

It is only when we are uncomforatble that we make changes in our lives and in our businesses. If the current economic recession has you uncomfortable, look for where the opportunities are.

For example, if you have savings, the price of some stocks right now are a bargain! You can buy them for what they were selling for more than a decade ago!

Want to buy a home? Prices are down to levels seen 5 years ago - and mortgage rates are still low as well!

In or looking to start a business? Look for what people need. Just the other day I heard of a company that is renting a bus and is arranging for people to visit about 30 foreclosed properties in the course of the day. The cost to go on the tour? $200. What an idea! You do the homework, rent the bus, and arrange the "showings" - get 20 people who take you up on it, you've made $4000 gross in one day!

So what do people need in this recession and how can you offer it to them?
